Virtuous Advertising?

Whilst I was doing an assignment on advertisement literacy for a class today… I ran across a campaign by Dove http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaH4y6ZjSfE&mode=related&search

Humm… so what do you guys think? Is a virtuous attempt by Dove to shift society’s views away from idealized body image, or is it part of a not so subtle advertising campaign by Dove, who is currently really pushing the ‘beauty from within’ idea, and thus is using this ad as a way to slam its competitors?

Seriously please respond to this blog and this ad… I’d love to hear from you guys.

I find it quite interesting that you came across this advertisement. Before I chose the other assignment I thought about analyzing this commercial. I think dove is trying to emphasize "inner beauty" but hit on several other issues with this ad. Quite controversial... but I like it!

Thanks for the comments on "Virtuous Advertising?" Joelle.... So I'm taking it that you think that this is indeed a part of a virtous attempt at dispelling negative body image by Dove and Unilever.
Humm... I think so too, but I still can't really shake the feeling of subtle mud-slinging by Dove....

Humm... Anyways thanks v. much for the comment on my blog.

I don't really think it's slamming the competition. What it breezes through in that ad is what the world is feeding the female minds. I don't think it really advocates Dove all that well, but it does make a good point- that young minds are impressionable and they need to be given positive feedback on themselves.
